Tansitioning Your Home From Summer To Autumn

Now that summer is over and the long dark nights are upon us our homes are a retreat from the cold outside. Here are some ideas to create your own cosy sanctuary with the décor you already have.

Add layers

Some fabrics, especially leather, can be particularly cold. By adding layers of blankets and cushions you can create a cosy Autumnal atmosphere. Textured cushions and chunky hand knotted blankets are perfect for creating softness and warmth. Embellished cushions, floral patterns and plaid all help to bring the feeling of autumn in to your home.

Bring the outdoors in
Embrace the feeling of by bringing nature in to your home. Let nature be your guide with the rich, robust and rustic elements of autumn. Choose plants and flowers that are naturally in season. Arrangements of branches, pussy willow stems and dried seed heads look great in the autumn and will cast beautiful shadows due to their sculptural qualities.

Scent
Who doesn’t love the scents associated with autumn? Pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg and musky undertones. Rotating candles and diffusers is a low cost way to evoke mood in the home through smell. I can’t get enough of The White Company Autumn Signature candle.

Or try this…. Collect pinecones and place them on a foil lined baking sheet in the oven for approximately 30 minutes at 90 degrees Celsius. Once taken out and cooled place into a re-sealable bag, add a few drops of your favourite autumn fragrance and shake. Leave sealed for a week then decorate your house with beautiful perfumed pinecones.

Add warm lighting
Just like you would layer blankets and cushions, layering combinations of different lights adds depth and dimension to a room, not to mention helping to beat those moody autumnal evenings. Think floor lights, table lamps and string lights. String lights create a magical Christmas feel with some interesting shadows.

Add metallics
If you don’t like the idea of changing your accessories to autumnal colours then adding metallics is a great way to add warmth and richness to a room. Consider gold, copper and even brass. Brass has made a massive comeback with it possessing more warm tones rather than yellow. The beauty of brass is found in the patina that it will develop over time. These lustrous materials add a sense of luxe and decadence.
